Rio De Janeiro based Arlene Kiefer is a longstanding Alternative Dispute Resolution expert specialising in mediation, training and conflict coaching. She is an accomplished public speaker and broadcaster and speaks fluent Portuguese, English and Spanish. In 2010 she was accredited by the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro as an English-Portuguese translator.
As a mediator Arlene has developed extensive expertise in handling multi-party cases often involving complex family, educational, employment, workplace mediation or commercial issues and is highly accomplished as a collaborative facilitator in discrimination and family cases.
Arlene began her career in the Brazilian Court of Justice as an administrator. Prior to ultimately leaving the court service to further her ADR career in 2017, she held a number of key court administration posts which gave her unique insights into the principles of case management, adoption, property valuation and commercial matters. In 2009 Arlene qualified as a mediator and pursued a joint court appointment as mediator and court administrator.
Having been an accredited member of Prime Dispute, an internationally renowned ADR organisation for some years, in 2019 Arlene joined KFM Consulting, a highly successful US based mediation, coaching and training company which was set up by another ASM associate, Kathleen Frascona, in 2009. Additionally, Arlene is accredited as a Business and Contractual Negotiator by ADcenter, a member of the highly esteemed US Jams International which only recognises high performing, accomplished mediators.
Arlene holds a Masters Degree in Mediation and Negotiation at Kurt-Bosch University, Switzerland and an Associate Degree, AAS in Strategies and Political Sciences from the Escola Superior de Guerra (ESG), Brazilian War College (2018). She teaches mediation with a particular emphasis on mediation advocacy skills for lawyers.
Arlene believes that a passionate mediator is a successful mediator. Because of her wide-ranging experience, she is particularly interested in developing negotiation and mediation to achieve resolution in conflicts involving matters where relationships may play a significant role. Drawing on her court realted expertise and her linguistic abilities she has the ability to case-manage complex disputes and if neccesary to participate in a structured mediation process over a number of months. She is well known for her calmness, patience and injecting a little humour to relieve tension but without ever compromising her independence and objectivity.
As a trainer, coach and facilitator Arlene assists her clients by helping to navigate through difficult, sometimes seemingly intractable situations and trains them to prevent conflict from escalating. Accordingly she creates opportunities for individuals and corporate entities to work in a team context, to expand and grow to their fullest potential, and ultimately to thrive in today’s highly competitive and demanding world.
