In the late autumn of 2017, five London-based mediators with family mediation expertise and experience presented this event which was well received by an appreciative audience. The group of five comprised me, my Albert Square Mediation colleague, Austin Chessell, Mary Malecka, Jacky Lewis and Deborah Butterworth and can be viewed via the link below.

I would like to thank Nockolds Solicitors who sponsored the event and their partner, Pete Dodd, who hosted it at their London office, Asad Yawar of Mediolana who did all the recording and production work and provided the still photographs, and Jacky for an excellent script.

With Jacky acting as narrator, the remaining members of the cast act out a number of extracts from a mediation scenario involving the characters Annabel and Anton who are divorced, and Anton’s rather overbearing mother, Marigold. Longstanding enmity, principally between Annabel and her ex-mother-in-law had resulted in her refusing her ex-husband contact with their two young children. In the course of the video which covers the mediation process from start to finish the audience are given a helpful insight into the contrasting views and outlooks of the three protagonists.

This process was very ably overseen by Austin who played the part of the mediator and the remaining “actors” who realistically portrayed their characters. This video demonstrates that even in very difficult circumstances where ostensibly, the disputing parties are a long way apart, meaningful resolution can be achieved in a fraction of the time that would have been required had matters simply gone through the court process and at considerably lower cost.

One particularly important aspect of mediation that was amply demonstrated by Austin was that as mediator he facilitated and did not seek to impose either a solution or his opinions. Because he maintained his professional neutrality, the parties were able to speak frankly to one another and ultimately reach a settlement that they were all comfortable with.

Along with Paul the #AlbertSquareMediation Family Team comprises: Austin Chessell, and Joanne Byrne. Between them the team members have backgrounds in and extensive experience of Family and Civil #Mediation, the Law, Counselling, Facilitation/Early Dispute Resolution, Parenting Issues, Training, the Education Sector and Disability and offer a full range of very timely and cost-effective services.
